SACAA Aviation medical requirements 2025: a comprehensive guide

Information & Documentation Required for Your Aviation Medical

At the Aviation Medical Centre, we follow the official requirements of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) to ensure your medical certification is completed correctly, efficiently, and without unnecessary delays. To make your visit smooth and stress-free, please prepare the following documents and information before your appointment.

1. Proof of Identity

We confirm your identity at every medical assessment. Please bring one of the following original documents:

  • South African ID document

  • South African driver’s licence

  • Valid passport

2. Aviation Licence & Current Certification

If you already hold an aviation licence or medical certificate, please bring:

  • Your aviation licence (if applicable)

  • Your current medical certificate

  • Your pilot logbook

3. Completed Forms (Submit Before Appointment)

To confirm your booking at the Aviation Medical Centre, please complete and return the following forms by email before your appointment:

4. Medication Details

Please provide a full list of:

  • Any chronic medication you currently take

  • Medication used on a regular basis (including over-the-counter medicines, homeopathic remedies, multivitamins, and supplements)

5. Vision & Spectacles

Bring all visual aids you currently use, as these are required for your eye test:

  • Reading glasses

  • Distance glasses

  • Bifocals or multifocals

  • Contact lenses

You should also bring a letter from your optometrist confirming your prescription.
Please note: Your aviation medical cannot be completed without your spectacles if they are prescribed.

6. Additional Requirements

  • Chest X-ray – Required for all initial medicals and some follow-up assessments. Please email your X-ray report to us before your appointment.

  • Exercise ECG – If you are scheduled for a treadmill ECG, please bring:

    • Running shoes

    • Comfortable exercise clothing (changing rooms are available)

  • Relevant medical reports – If you have a pre-existing medical condition, please bring any supporting reports from your healthcare provider.

After Your Examination

Once your assessment is complete:

  • Your information is uploaded directly to the SACAA system.

  • Your medical certificate is printed on-site at the Aviation Medical Centre. This process typically takes around 15 minutes after the exam.

Please note:

  • A certificate cannot be issued if required documentation or X-rays are missing.

  • If further tests or reports are needed, we will provide written instructions and referrals.

  • In some cases, your medical may need final approval by the SACAA Aeromedical Committee (AMC). If so, you will be given the requirements in writing.
