Frequently Asked Questions

  • Only a Designated Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME), licensed by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), may conduct aviation medicals.

    A general practitioner without specialized training in aviation medicine is not authorized to perform these assessments.

    • Class 1 – Airline Transport Pilot (ATPL), Commercial Pilot (CPL), Flight Engineer, Flight Test Rating

    • Class 2 – Private Pilot (PPL), Student Pilot

    • Class 3 – Air Traffic Controller (ATC), Drone Pilot

    • Class 4 – Cabin Crew, Microlight, Glider, Gyroplane, Free Balloon

    • Vision and hearing tests (audiometry)

    • Lung function tests (spirometry)

    • Cardiac assessment (ECG)

    • Blood pressure and BMI assessment

    • Urine tests

    • Chest X-ray (required for first-time applicants)

    • Your ID or passport

    • Corrective lenses (if you wear them)

    • Your previous medical certificate (for renewals)

    • A chest X-ray (if it’s your first medical)

  • Validity depends on your class of medical, age, and any underlying conditions.

    Your examiner will advise you of the exact period during your appointment.

  • In most cases, yes.

    However, certification may be delayed, as we need to submit supporting investigations to the SACAA for review and approval.
